Instant Oats Idlis

Instant Oats Idlis is very tasty and very easy to prepare. It’s very similar to Instant Rava Idlis(do check if you haven’t).

Idlis are my most favourite comfort food (that too when there is no soaking, grinding and fermenting) and when it’s hot, steamy, soft  of course tasty and paired with the right side dish… awwwww! What can I ask more? When I started to cook myself is when I realized how light they are for the tummy (and how heavy when doing the dishes, well.. that’s another story ☹)!! Now, to this simple recipe!

Serves: 2

For the Batter:

Oats: 1 cup
Semolina: ½ cup
Sour Curd: 1 cup
Carrot: 1 (grated)
Onion: 1 (diced)
Fresh Peas: handful (optional)
Ginger: 1” (grated)
Coriander leaves: 1 tbsp
Baking soda: ½ tsp
Salt: as required
Water: as required

For the Seasoning:

Mustard: ½  tsp
Jeera: ½ tsp
Urad dal: ½ tsp
Chenna dal: 1 tsp
Hing: a pinch
Ghee: 2 tsp

In a pan dry roast the oats till they turn crisp. Cool and grind to a coarse powder and transfer to a plate.

In the same pan add 2 tsp of ghee and do the seasoning. Then add the grated carrots, ginger and diced onions and fry for a minute, then add half cup of semolina and roast until you get a nice aroma and cool the mixture. Transfer this mixture to a mixing bowl and add the powdered oats, required salt add chopped coriander and mix. Add a cup of curd and give a good mix, add enough water to get an idli batter consistency. Let the batter sit for at least 10 minutes.

Now add more water if required and then add baking soda and mix till the batter turns frothy. After adding baking soda do not let it sit for more time. Grease the idli plates with ghee/oil and pour the batter into the idli moulds and steam it for 15 minutes. Serve hot with any side dish of your choice. Enjoy!

  • If the curd is not sour add few drops of lemon juice for the baking soda to react easily and make idlis soft and fluffy.
  • Add the curd only after the mixture is completely cooled.
  • Don’t skip roasting semolina and oats or else  idlis will be sticky.
