Samai Khichdi

Samai Khichdi is a simple dish prepared with Samai aka Little Millet or Kutki. Samai Khichdi is a no garlic – no onion recipe. You can eat this dish if you are fasting on Ekadashi.

Samai is rich in phytochemicals and it has excellent antioxidant properties. Helps in reducing cholesterol and increases digestion. It has nearly 2.5 times minerals, 38 times fiber and 13 times iron than rice!! This millet has abundant thiamine i.e. Vitamin B1 which is not present in rice or wheat. It also reduces the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart attack.

So, you can reap the benefits even on fasting! Now to this simple, tasty and delicious recipe.

Serves: 2


Samai rice: 1 cup
Tomato: 2 big & juicy
Carrot: 2
Ginger:  1” piece
Green chilli paste: 1 tsp
Ghee: 2 tsp
Jeera: 1 tsp
Curry leaves:  a sprig
Pepper powder: ¼ tsp
Roasted Jeera powder: 1 tsp
hilli powder: 1/3 tsp
Rock salt: as required
Water: 2 cups
Coriander leaves: for garnishing


Chop the carrots into big pieces and keep it aside.
Blend the tomatoes in a mixie/blender and keep it ready.
Grate the ginger and keep it aside.
Clean and wash the samai rice in fresh water to remove the dirt if any. Keep it ready aside.
Grind the chillies and ground the roasted jeera to a fine powder and keep these ready as well.


In a pan add ghee and fry jeera until it turns aromatic. Then add curry leaves and grated ginger and fry for a couple of minutes. Add green chilli paste and chopped carrots and fry for few minutes. Now, add the tomato puree and cook for a minute. 

Add roasted jeera powder, chilli powder and pepper powder and cook until the raw smell goes. Now, add washed samai rice and add 2 cups of water and required salt.

When it starts to boil, cover the lid and cook for 5 whistles. Once the pressure subsides, fluff with fork. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Offer to the Lord and serve!

  • Add more water if you want your khichdi soft.
  • You can reduce the amount of ghee if you prefer. You can also use peanut oil instead.
  • Matured pumpkin, potatoes, sweet potatoes can also be used for preparing samai khichdi.
