Vada Pappu aka Kosambari is a salad that is made with moong dal and veggies and offered as Naivedyam to Lord Ram on Sri Rama Navami. There are several ways of preparing this and this recipe is what is followed in our home.
Vada Pappu can also be made and had on any other day it is not only healthy but also very tasty and filling. Do check my collection of Sri Rama Navami Naivedyam such as neer majiga and panakam recipe.

Cucumber: ½ cup
Unripe Mango: ½ cup
Mustard: ¼ tsp
Urid Dal: ½ tsp
Mor Milagai: 3

Grate unripe mango and carrots and keep it aside.
Grate the cucumber and squeeze the juice and keep it aside.
Do check my recipe on cucumber buttermilk to make from the squeezed juice ☺!!
You can also chop the cucumber if you prefer.
Chop the coriander leaves and curry leaves and keep it separately.
Squeeze the juice from ½ lemon and keep it ready.
Clean and wash the moong dal in running water. Keep it ready.
In a pan take ¾ cup water and the moong dal. Let it cook until soft but not mushy.
Add the grated carrots; cucumber; unripe mango, lemon juice, chopped coriander leaves, curry leaves, coconut and required salt. Mix well.
In a seasoning pan add ghee and mustard. When it splutters add urad dal and mor milagai (a) curd chillies and hing. Once the dal turns golden colour switch off the flame.
When mor milagai is warm enough crumble them and add the seasoning to Vada pappu and mix well.
Our Vada Pappu is ready to be offered to The Lord. Enjoy!!
- Adjust lemon juice according to the unripe Mango.
- Don’t avoid mor milagai. It is the secret tastemaker. Highly recommended!! You can also add green chillies or red chillies based on the availability.
